California Predicted to Lose $329M to Cybercrime in 2018

The Golden State will be hit hardest but New York will lose the most money per incident.

Cybercrime will cost Californians big-time in 2018, with researchers at Website Builder Expert predicting individuals will lose $329M over the course of this year. It's far ahead of second-place New York, which is expected to lose $139.4M, and third-place Florida ($111.7M).

Researchers dug into publicly available data to predict how cybercrime will affect individual states in 2018. Michigan is predicted to have the greatest density of attacks, with 201.9 complaints per 100,000 people, followed by Florida (176.4) and Delaware (175.6).

Cybercrime is growing fastest in the Sunshine State. Florida is expected to have yearly growth of 1,421 attacks, followed by Michigan (1,295) and Illinois (562). New Yorkers will pay the most per cyberattack at $7,149 per incident, followed by Virginia ($6,795) and Colorado ($6,106).

Considering the size and population of California, it's little surprise to learn the state is also predicted to have the highest number of cybercrime complaints at 55,774. This is more than 18,000 complaints higher than Florida (37,225) and Texas (33,644).
